Hafan Gobaith

Music by Delyth Rees, words by Eleri Richards, arrangement by Valerie Hoppe.

This song was composed to raise funds towards the building of Hope House, a children’s hospice in Morda near Oswestry. Fundraising started in 1991 and the hospice opened in 1995. At the time Hope House was only the tenth children’s hospice in the world. Since then the charity has opened another hospice Tŷ Gobaith and centres for counselling and support. Hafan Gobaith was recorded by Bryn Terfel as part of the campaign and in 2003 a version featuring many singers including Terfel was recorded for a later appeal.

Words

Pan fyddo’r ystorom
Yn bygwth gwae uwch dy ben,
A therfysg diwedd dydd
Sydd yn rhwygo erwau’r nen.
Pan fyddo’r cysgodion
Yn taenu ias dros y tir,
Mantell ofnau’r nos
Sydd yn gaddug blin o gur.

Yma fe gei ysbaid
Noddfa i’th enaid,
Cei yma orffwys
Yn hafan gobaith hyd y wawr.

Pan fyddo dy lwybr
Mor faith a thithau’n llesgáu
A chopa’r bryn ymhell,
Gorwel nad yw’n agosáu.
Pan fyddo dy ysbryd
Ar fin diffygio’n llwyr,
A baich unigedd byd
Sydd yn drech ym min yr hwyr.

Yma fe gei ysbaid
Noddfa i’th enaid,
Cei yma orffwys
Yn hafan gobaith hyd y wawr.

I’r sawl sy’n myned drwy ei ddôr,
Cynhaliaeth gref a ddaw.
Ffydd, gobaith a chariad Iôr
Yw’r heulwen wedi’r glaw.

Translation

When the storm is
Threatening woe above your head,
And the upheaval of the end of the day
Tears the acres of the sky.
When the shadows
Scatter a shudder over the land,
The mantle of fears of the night
Is a sad gloom of aching.

Here you will get respite
A refuge to your soul
Her you will get rest
In a sanctuary of hope until the dawn.

When your path is
So long and you languishing
And the top of the hill far,
The horizon not getting closer.
When your spirit is
About to tire completely
And the burden of world isolation
Is overwhelmingly prevalent in the evening.

Here you will get respite
A refuge to your soul
Her you will get rest
In a sanctuary of hope until the dawn.

To the few who come through its door,
Strong support will come
Faith, hope and love of God
Is the sunshine after the rain.
